On this 1378km route you will cycle 27 stages through six countries; Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, France and Holland. Each stages averages just over 50km, a fit cyclist, covering two stages per day should be able to complete the trip in two weeks. A more leisurely 80km per day would allow some sightseeing and you would still complete the journey in 17 days. The cycling itself is easy, as much of the route is downhill the perks of following a river from source to sea. As all the countries are very cycle-friendly, you will find a good quality of waymarking, and that the dedicated cycle paths are well maintained. The route is suitable for both experienced long-distance cyclists, and those new to cycle touring, and wish to attempt something more adventurous. The natural scenery along the Rhine is wonderfully varied. High mountains with deep glacial valleys and gorges are soon followed by a visit to Bodensee, western Europes second-largest natural lake. The Rhine Gorge is the site of spectacular scenery, lined with fairytale castles and award-winning vineyards. The river then becomes broader as you cycle along the worlds busiest river trading artery, before splitting into five separate channels to the sea. the Rhine Cycle Route is not technically challenging, but very varied in terms of scenery etc all countries passed through are highly cycle-friendly, and offer a high standard of waymarking throughout fit cyclists should be able to complete the route in two weeks
